Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service Put Spirit 900 to the Test in Large-Scale Training Exercise

Fire crews from across Devon recently took part in a large-scale multi-agency training exercise at Trago Mills, supported by Concept Smoke Systems’ Spirit 900 smoke generator.

The scenario was designed to replicate a serious incident in an electrical installation unit, with an initial report of a missing staff member. Crews wearing breathing apparatus were deployed to search the premises while simultaneously tackling the simulated fire using jets and firefighting media.

As the exercise progressed, the situation escalated to include reports of the fire spreading into the main retail area, where multiple staff members were believed to be unaccounted for. The incident was sectorised, and further resources were requested to support the operation. In total, nine firefighters in breathing apparatus successfully located and rescued eight casualties in realistic conditions.

The Spirit 900 played a central role in creating a safe but highly authentic training environment. Its dense, controllable smoke output provided crews with the same visibility challenges they would encounter during a real fire, helping them refine search and rescue techniques, teamwork, and communication.

Exercises like these are vital for preparing crews to respond quickly and effectively to complex incidents, all while strengthening collaboration with local businesses and communities.

Concept Smoke Systems is proud to continue supplying Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service with the Spirit 900, supporting the development of firefighter training across the region.
