Development of an Ultra-Lightweight Drone Smoke Machine for HAZMAT Training

Concept Smoke Systems Ltd has completed the initial development stage of an ultra-compact drone mountable smoke machine after being approached by a military client seeking a safer, more realistic way to deploy visible smoke from above during HAZMAT training scenarios.

The requirement sounded simple – attach a smoke generator to a “standard 8-inch” class drone for short, controlled releases of dense visible smoke during exercises. In practice, it is quite the engineering challenge. Once you account for airframe, battery, payload mounting, and flight stability, the smoke system’s weight limit lands at ~2kg.

Despite these constraints, Concept proto-typed a UAV mountable smoke system weighing just 1.75kg, measuring 230 x 130 x 120mm, and capable of producing a large volume of smoke for 60-90 seconds, all activated by radio remote control.

Why a Drone Smoke Machine?
Traditional ground based smoke generators work well for room filling but a drone deployable smoke machine adds a new layer of realism, smoke can be placed exactly where it’s needed, at the moment it’s needed.

The Result: A Drone Mountable Smoke Generator
The new Concept unit was engineered specifically for drone deployment and training use, with everything integrated into a compact package.
