Concept Spirit 900 supports RAF Museum London’s largest emergency exercise
Concept Smoke Systems recently supplied a Spirit 900 smoke generator on hire to RAF Museum London, helping create realistic conditions for the Museum’s largest annual emergency exercise to date.
Held on 5 October 2026, the exercise simulated a serious fire in a server room and adjoining offices in Hangar 3. Synthetic smoke and staged casualties challenged participants to put their emergency procedures into practice, testing evacuation, rescue, medical response, incident management and communications.
The exercise brought together the Museum’s teams, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service, supported by police observers. Twelve volunteer actors from Casualties Union played casualties, while Middlesex University media students added another dimension by simulating news coverage and media enquiries.
For a museum, emergency planning must consider both the people on site and the historic collections in its care. The exercise provided an opportunity to test how these responsibilities are managed together under pressure.
Reflecting on the exercise on LinkedIn, Alan Edwards, Head of Operations at the RAF Museum, commented:
“Effective emergency preparedness depends on clear plans, strong partnerships, and teams who can work confidently together under pressure.”
Smoke simulation helps bring those plans off the page. Reduced visibility can make familiar spaces more difficult to navigate, adding a practical challenge to evacuation, communication and rescue exercises. Supplying the Spirit 900 on hire allowed the Museum to incorporate this realism into its scenario.
We’re pleased to have supported the RAF Museum London team and congratulate everyone involved in delivering such a comprehensive exercise.
