Is there any IMO approved Smoke Generating Equipment?

Since the first Naval Fleet order in 1989, Concept Smoke Systems have been heavily involved with maritime fire training, now the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers) states the importance of smoke generating equipment on board vessels:

Fire prevention and fire fighting:

  • Use self-contained breathing apparatus; and
  • effect a rescue in a smoke-filled space - using an approved smoke-generating device aboard, while wearing a breathing apparatus

Concept's Colt 4 Turbo is the most capable hand held smoke generator in the world.  After extensive testing, the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary took delivery of the Colt 4 Turbo smoke machine on board their entire fleet to add extreme realism to training scenarios.

What our users say:

"I would like to recommend the Concept Smoke Machine to all shipboard trainers.  The smoke produced is very realistic. I use the machine during search and rescue exercises and fire drills.

A valuable lesson when using smoke is that if the ventilation is not stopped and fire flaps not closed immediately the smoke will rapidly spread to other compartments and decks.

The machine is very easy to use and is virtually maintenance free.  Concept provide an excellent after sales service!"  Captain Malcolm Martin MNM - Arklow Shipping
