The London Olympic Opening Ceremony 2012
Concept Smoke Systems at the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony
Amidst the thundering drums and rising chimneys of the “Pandemonium” section, Concept Smoke Systems played a crucial behind-the-scenes role by supplying over 20 smoke generators to Artem Special Effects, the main stage-effects provider.
Forging the Industrial Revolution Live
Designed by Danny Boyle, the “Pandemonium” sequence evoked the explosive power of Britain’s Industrial Revolution. Giant factories emerged from beneath the stadium floor, punctuated by drumming, mechanics, and riveting soundscapes. Amid this spectacle, dense plumes of smoke billowed from the towering chimneys, giving dramatic definition to each mechanical tableau.
Concept’s fog generators supplied an even, dense haze that defined the space and heightened the visual narrative—making beams of light tangible and amplifying the dramatic energy on stage.
Legacy of Innovation
While mainstream acclaim showered the opening ceremony for its ingenious storytelling and spectacle, Concept Smoke Systems’ contribution remained essential yet unsung. Their precision haze amplified the industrial theme, transforming the stadium into a living canvas of Britain’s heritage.
Reflecting on their link to this global milestone, Concept’s team remarked:
“Supplying the smoke machines for that sequence was a proud moment—blending technical reliability with theatrical artistry on the world’s biggest stage.”
