Concept ViCount supports hot smoke testing at Gatwick Airport
Concept’s ViCount smoke generator has been used in a successful hot smoke test at Gatwick Airport’s newly built Pier 2 main passenger core.
Carried out by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) on behalf of BAA during the night of 3-4 November 2003, the test assessed the building’s fire protection measures and examined smoke movement through the passenger area.
A controlled fire supplied the heat, while the ViCount smoke generator introduced visible smoke, allowing the team to observe its movement and assess how the building’s fire safety systems responded. A positive pressure ventilation fan was then used to evaluate its effectiveness in clearing the smoke.
The exercise followed several weeks of planning, involving BRE scientists, airport engineers, terminal management and both local and airport fire services.
BAA’s first hot smoke test was judged highly successful, providing valuable insight into the building’s fire protection measures and greater confidence in the use of hot smoke testing across its facilities.
